Choreography moodboard

Inspired by the shapes and movements of contemporary dance I figured it would be handy to put together a moodboard of what kind of movements I would like to have in my choreography since I intend on choreograph the whole thing myself so it would be tailored to my animation.

Extended Practice: Concept Work

So following my previous sketch work I took some of them for reference and made some more sketchy work, only digitalised this time! To be completely honest, I did this work as a hobby, so so far this project is like a free time activity which I am really happy with because I am actually really enjoy making it. I am also really happy with the sketches that I come up with because it feels like my years of work on drawings skills are finally coming together.

Extended Practice: Sketching

I have tried making a few sketches while listening to my picked song and see if I could come up with some concept work. Here a couple of sketches I have done in my sketchbook studying the anatomy, trying to stylise it and try a couple of different angles and positions, no reference was used for these sketches:

The next thing I will do now is take some of these sketches and try to digitalise them, see if I could come up with any concept work from this.

Extedned Practice: Mood Boards

So for my dance animation I have created a few mood boards for drawing dance positions and the human anatomy, as well glitch art and design ideas for the animated chorus. I also looked into some dance/glitch combination ideas, the third mood board was glitch themed as well but I wanted to look into some colour combinations as well, because I would like to use that sort of candy pink, green and blue combination for the animated part:

Extended Practice Idea

I have been wondering about my extended practice since the end of last year and through the summer I decided I want to make a dance animation. I feel like my whole interest in animation has always been in relation to human anatomy and its movement, and I have always been fascinated by contemporary dance. Basically, I am going to treat this module as a platform for doing something I feel my whole practice has been building up to. I feel like I have developed my animation and drawing skills to a point where I can execute this project to a high level. I have a pretty specific idea of what I want to do when it comes to live action part of the video but for the animated part I would ned to do some testing because I want it to be glitchy. Basically I am going to use this soundtrack:
The idea is to communicate a story using body language (dance) and use animation as a means of exaggeration for the movement. The first verse would be a girl dancing (live action) as the chorus would start she would change into animation and would be glitchy, as the second verse would start the girl would disappear and a male figure would appear. It then would follow the males choreography and again the chorus would be animated. The third verse would be the man and girl finally see each other and do synchronised choreography. they would be like a mirror- synchronised but could really cross the line to touch each other and the third chorus would be going back and forth from animated to live action to give it this explosive glitchy feel.
In a nutshell I have built my whole idea around this song and I can't wait to get started!!

Extended Practice: Rationale

Where are you documenting the development of Extended Practice online?

Broadly speaking what are you interested in exploring and why?

I am interested in exploring dance animation and the production of music videos because I have been fascinated by contemporary dance for years and wanted to produce a proper dance animation for as long as I have been interested in animation.

What you want to do during this module? Be as specific as you can at this moment in time.
If you plan on working on multiple briefs to demonstrate your practice, identify clearly each brief.

I would like to create a ~3 minute music video, which would be part animated, part live action. With this project I would like to demonstrate how animation can push movement and dance further than live I action, as well as demonstrating my knowledge of human anatomy in movement and animating skills. Basically, I would set the brief myself and It would be an individual project.

Explain how this will be developing your Specialist Practice?

It would be a great piece of work for my portfolio and would demonstrate exactly what I am interested in as a practitioner in the animation industry, which is animating movement and developing character animation. It would also be a piece of work I could present to animation festivals and competitions.

What do you need and by When?

I would require a camera for filming the live action part of the project and a studio space, like the one in the photography course space. I am pretty sure everything I will require is accessible at the college and we have already had inductions on the equipment and how to book a studio space.

Will you be working on a group project or brief?
( If YES explain )

This project will be more individual than a group brief. I will be collaborating with dancers and I may require to take some people on board if I need help with editing footage. However I do not believe I will not require collaboration on the animating part.

Are there any stakeholders in your project?
If YES, explain who they are and what their responsibilities are? - This is essential if you've got a Live Brief from a client

There will be no stakeholdres.

What, where and when do you need to research. Begin to identify and artists, practitioners, companies or organisations that you will need to talk to. This could include getting to speak to people at conferences, events and other organisations.

I will need to reach out to dance schools. As for animating dance, I have researched this subject for years now, so I believe I am at a stage where I am ready to start working on it. I might need to research the festivals I would like to submit the finished project to.
